So it won’t be as off road capable as a 60 series now?

Tsk tsk

Why, sure, we’ll keep a ladder frame, fore and aft drivetrain, and all those other little things that identify this as a T1xx truck, but straight rear axle? That’s silly! - a pillock

Who were all these people screaming that their Suburban (and more importantly Escalade) wasn’t cornering like a sports car? And who wanted to go on the record as wanting a Suburban that was not a good idea to tow with? I need to know so I can fight them.

I already knew due to job-related SOOPER SEKRIT INFO that the top end transmissions weren’t showing up in the T1xx SUVs, but fuck me is this stupid.

Considering most GM SUV’s never tow or see any off road applications outside of a gravel road or yard, it’s not that big of a deal. Tow ratings for IRS full size SUV’s are hovering just around what the solid axle GM group does. 5900-6000lbs for the 2018 Expedition, and 6000-6300lbs for the 2018 Chevy Suburban. I’m shocked they didn’t switch to IRS sooner, really.

Autoblog kind of skipped over the part where the Expedition has had IRS since 2003.

it’s not about handling, really. It’s about improving cargo and seating flexibility by lowering the floor. with an IRS having the differential housing attached to the frame, you can pass the half shafts through the frame rails like Ford does:

Kinja'd!!!

the frame rails can basically stay the same height all the way back.

with a live rear axle, the frame has to rise up to give the axle assembly clearance during suspension jounce:

I mean... I guess? I was well aware that Ford was doing Silly Things with the Expedition and doing alright, but I guess I’m mostly just a little mystified that GM is doing this *now*, as opposed to some time ago, if they were going to do it.

It’s just that GM is selling twice as many Suburbans as Expeditions, and well over five times as many Tahoes + Escalades + Suburbans. I get that Ford has done things to make the Expedition tow-capable, but there’s probably quite a percentage of the current GM numbers who (a) don’t really make that much of a demand for third row footwells, and (b) have certain expectations for a tow vehicle. Seems like unless GM feels it can cannibalize other markets (minivan, etc.) they might be taking some of their customers for granted.

Also, from what I remember of the T1xx SUV floorpan, it’s not *that* flat, and is still markedly stepped down, so...

Who knows. That might be due to a compromise design and heavy duty models may still have a beam... in which case, 1500 going independent mostly just looks loopy.

Good, that should let them drop the load floor back down. The current one’s look great, but the load floor is too damn high!

Strictly my opinion, but I think the success of the new Navigator is behind this. Years of Ford phoning in their large SUV efforts let GM keep on keepin on; but now that Navigator is stealing customers from other brands (esp. Escalade) they’ve got to keep up.

Exactly. And improve the third row comfort along the way.

Could be; and perversely, with Cadillac being in theory a technology mascot, having a live axle all this time might be considered falling down on the job. I’m not even a GM fan, I just had something of a reflexive “dafuq”, because it conflicts with what I understand GM SUVs to be - and doubtless the sense of many others, some of whom buy Suburbans. Anyone who *is* a GM fan might be even more put off, and anybody buying a Suburban *because* it rightly or wrongly more resembles a truck qua truck is in for a rude surprise.
